A 100 YEAR HISTORY OF FLEET AND EWSH0T HOCKEY CLUB 5 of 14

5. The Introduction Of League Hockey

With the advent of league hockey a decision was made to enter, not the league for Hampshire or Surrey but, the one covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire with the reason for this choice unclear. The Club played in this league for six years from 1972/73 with the Men’s 1st XI being promoted in their first season from Division 3 and then performing solidly in Division 2 through to 1977/78. In these years league opposition came from places such as Henley, Banbury, Newbury, Woodley, Wallingford and Farnham Common.
The following season in order to benefit from a higher standard of matches the Club moved to the Surrey League with the Men’s 1st XI winning Division 3 having been unbeaten all season. They repeated this feat the next season in Division 2 and were promoted to Division 1. In 1983/84 another unbeaten season saw the team promoted to the Hampshire/Surrey Regional League where they performed strongly into the 1990’s. Leading goalscorers for the club in the 1970’s and 1980’s were Rex Morris’ sons Paul and Kim with league records showing Paul scoring 77 goals in 41 matches from 1975-88 and Kim 29 goals in 27 matches from 1977-87 for the Men’s 1st XI, but there were many more with Paul scoring over 100 in just one season when taking account of goals in Indoor, Mixed and Cup competitions – and Paul started off as a goalkeeper! And talking of goalkeepers while all these goals were going in for Fleet at one end, the inimitable Steve Davies Men’s 1st XI keeper for many of these years was thwarting most efforts against us at the other end!
The other Men’s teams playing in Hampshire also had their successes with the 2nd XI winning their leagues in 1981 and 1986 and the 3rd XI their league in 1988. Indoor hockey was popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s before the widespread use of Astroturf pitches and Fleet ran a number of teams entering four during 1986/87 and ended up winning the league that season. Matches took place in Fleet and Aldershot sports centres. In 1982 the Men’s 1st XI also won the Rushmoor Indoor League.
