Men’s Vets v Worthing - EH O50’s Cup

MV’s (the Old Deers) put up a good display on Sunday 26/11 against Worthing but ended up losing 4-0 to a strong, well drilled team that had a full squad of 16.
We lined up with Griff in goal, defence of Graham Jackson, the returning James Abley, Simon Dearnley and James Edwards, a midfield of the two Matt’s Bradley and Viney, Ed Peet and Simon MacDowall with John Mcfadzean and Clive Harder in attack. Recent newcomer Ian Finn rotated as a sub with George Jackson nursing a badly bruised toe also available from the bench if needed.
It quickly became apparent that Worthing were a more than capable outfit, able to move the ball quickly and create chances. However we worked hard across the team and kept them at bay for the opening 15 minutes while also forging some useful openings and being unlucky not to score. Worthing took the lead from a loose ball in the D and shortly thereafter were awarded a PS from a shot that deflected off Griff and on to my stomach which was heading goalwards. The resulting flick was miss-hit but sneaked in, so 2-0 down. We picked up though with John characteristically throwing himself at crosses coming in to their D, with one shot hitting some part of the post or bar and their keeper being kept busy.
The second half was much like the first. Yes we were on the backfoot for periods but we also created a number of opportunities and were unfortunate not to score at least one. Worthing nicked a third from a cheeky deflection and then a fourth but no more and Griff made some excellent saves throughout the match as did their keeper. Matt V took a knock to the chin but was fine after a breather and I covered knees and elbows in blood following a coming together with a Worthing forward that involved a nice pitch slide. Everyone had a strong match but MoM went to Matt B for his tireless work in midfield, superb runs and great distribution.
Overall a nice competitive match with the scoreline not really reflecting the balance of play, Worthing took their chances, we didn’t.

So unfortunately the Old Deers are out of the Cup for another year. Hopefully we can find a friendly or two before the end of the season…..
