Girls win SE Tier 2 West on goal difference despite defeat.

Despite a defeat in a game which was much closer than the scoreline shows, the u16 girls A team were confirmed today as champions of SE Tier 2 West on goal difference. This is just reward for an amazing season, and shows just how good this squad is.

Today was a difficult game, with the entirety of our forward line missing, as well as the 2 I would have called up to replace them. This meant we were rotating to find the right partnerships, and while everyone did their best it did highlight just how important the runs and switches which Ella, Tilly & Mia make are to the effectiveness of the performance.

Despite this, we were arguably the better team for the majority of the game. Guildford started stronger and deservedly took the lead 10 minutes, before doubling their advantage just before the half way point of the half. From this point onwards we were increasingly dominant, but could not score from either several PCs or open play chances. We pulled one back 2 minutes before half time when Amelia took the ball along the byline from left wing past two defenders and crossed. The ball found its way to Amelie who scored with aplomb.

Buoyed by this we came out strongly in the second half, but could not quite find the touch for an equaliser. Around the midpoint of the half, Guildford managed to score two more from breaks, but we never gave up and kept pushing to the final whistle.

This was a good performance, and everyone played well - it was just not to be today - but remember the previous 9 victories in the league, and enjoy being divisional champions.

We advance to the SE play-offs on 24th April, and look forward to a final celebration of this team and squad - who have grown so much, shown amazing maturity and grown into a self-confident and self-managing group of girls. They will go far.

Thanks to Darren Scutter for umpiring and to all the parents for their support both today and over the whole of the season.
