Men’s 1’s hosted fellow mid table Sunbury having beaten them away from home. With players returning boosting the squad a strong squad of 13 and coach hop-along (JI Knighton) we were confident of making it a double.
The game stated with a spell of pressure by sunbury that was repelled. Flushot broke up the pitch won our first short corner chris povey drag flick was the call from Alex Millard ‘because his girlfriend is watching’ he shot well and it was deflected home by me.
Sunbury responded scoring an almost identical goal.
1-1 at half time
We spoke about upping the quality of basics and keeping positive in the second half
We duly delivered scoring early through a brilliant breakaway and bottom corner finish from Charlie D for his first one’s goal of the season. Sunbury then won a P-flick after a ‘minor’ body check by Nick (his third in 2 weeks). But cometh the hour, Nick did his best Emi Martinez impression and well and truly got in their forwards head and saved well to his right (his second save in two weeks). Sunbury however equalised again, via a turn johan cruyff would have been proud of from Nick Franklin to turn a loose ball into his own net.
But fear not we raised our game again to score a somewhat scrappy goal that I will generously say crossed the line by mm’s before it was caught by an opposition defender from Archie R, lalso for his first goal of the season. We then immediately conceded again through some sloppy defending.
But the story continues we were dominating the game, we won a second short corner. The call the same a great injection from Will and Chris stuck it top left to take the lead for the 4th time.
We finally learned from our mistakes and played out the rest of the game in convincing fashion to run out 4-3 winners.
Man of the match went to Chris for a quality drag flick to win the game and general all round play
DOD to nick for his efforts to keep the game interesting
