A great result last weekend! Our first ever girls competition and our first ever win in our first game. Over all results for those not there we played 4 games won 1 Drew 1 and lost 2. We scored 2 goals and conceded 4. and with only 7 in the team where most sides had rolling subs for each Game.

 

Our first game was against Salisbury B and we won 1-0 our goal came from a great run up the right wing from Natasha a good 1-2 with Liz. Natasha then drew the defence to her before putting a ball back across the goal for Liz to put the ball past the keeper. Our defense was particularly strong in this game with Sophie and Ellie working really well together and i don't think Lucy in goal touched the ball in the first game.

 

This however changed in the second game against Fareham who looked strong from the off and soon went 1-0 up within 2 minutes from the off. To be fair the goal was very well worked and the end strike gave Lucy D-H (Who was having her first game ever in goal) no chance. The way they started I thought we might concede a hat full of goals, but our heads did not go down and the team played really well creating chances at the other end when we countered. Lucy C playing in Centre mid had a very busy game and played really well, and Louise playing her first ever game did really well. I was particularly impressed when she ran back to help defend when she saw one of the Fareham girls trying to sneak in at the back post. I hear she could teach the under 14's a thing or two about playing positions (they had a bad defeat against Alton on Sunday). Eventually Fareham wore us down and in a goal mouth scramble after Lucy D-H had blocked 4 or 5 shots at goal and I think both Ellie and Sophie had cleared off the line Fareham manager to scrape the ball over the line. a 2-0 loss but we went down fighting against a more experienced and organised team.

 

Haslemere were next and we had just watched them put 3 past Winchester. So I feared the worst but it was not to be we had a thrilling end to end game with them with attack and counter attack again everyone on the pitch contributed and we had some great contributions from Natasha and Ellie who both had some great individual runs down the wings to clear us out of trouble. Lucy D-H was also in on the act with a kicked clearance half way up the pitch to Liz our lone striker.  Haslemere eventually got the better of us but only just and won 1-0.

 

Our last game was against the tournament hosts Trojans. Trojans took an early lead and the rest of the game settled into an furious and fast end to end game with some great attacking and counter attacking and solid defending from both teams. and with two minutes left I thought that that would be the final score when Sophie took a sixteen hit self passed and ran over half the pitch before feeding the ball forward to Natasha who again drew the defence wide before passing the ball to Liz. Liz's first shot was saved but she picked up the rebound and with the keeper off balance slipped the ball around her for a well deserved 1-1 draw.

 

A great day I believe all of the girls played particularly well and they all contributed to a good overall team result and for me it capped a great weekend for the club as 5 out of the 6 adult teams also won on Saturday!

 

Onto next weekend at LWC for our next tournament, It promises to be a great day with a training session and exhibition game and an appearance from Alex Danson, we also have two of the club coaches in attendance as Angie will be there in the morning before going of to Romsey for a ladies 1st team game and Jase Keen will be there for the whole day.
