Men’s 2nd XI Match report

Fleet v  Weymouth

So the Men’s 2’s endured the long haul down to Weymouth, to face a team placed a number of positions above us in the league.

With Weymouth dictating early possession and showing some good skill, and speed in attack, it wasn’t long before they took the lead. 1 – 0 to the home side. Their attacks persisted, and but for Tobie pulling off some exceptional saves, Weymouth could have scored a few more within the first 10 minutes… It was however just a matter of time before they scored their second goal – with everyone expecting a pass to the top of D, the Weymouth striker decided it would be a better option to squeeze one in from a tight angle. 2 – 0 to the home team. Now lesser teams may have rolled over and taken a pounding, but not the Men’s 2’s, the second goal caused us to spring into action. Our highlight of the first half undoubtedly came from a short corner, it also resulted in my uncontested nomination for D.O.T.D. The ball was expertly injected to the top of the D, by none other than yours truly, Simon picked his spot and struck the ball with great force towards the bottom corner, beating all defenders and the keeper in the process… 2 – 1. No, wait!! Weymouth had recruited another defender, and I managed to save the ball on the line and deflect it past the far post.
Half time score 2 – 0.

If Weymouth dominated the first half, the second half was a very different story. Probably something to do with the team talk that Simon and myself gave at half time, or perhaps not. Weymouth were struggling to deal with our higher press, which eventually resulted in Kyle pulling a goal back. 2 – 1. Our pressure was starting to tell, and it was clear that Weymouth’s way of handling this was to “hack” our players down… Josh, who was unplayable on occasions, and James being the main recipients of this treatment. Our second goal came from a well worked short corner, again expertly injected, but this time despatched by Tom – drag flick. 2 – 2. The hosts were rattled, and it wasn’t long before our third, and probably best goal was chalked up. This again came from a short corner, with the Weymouth keeper pushing the initial shot into my path. Under immense pressure, I was able to compose myself, and push the ball the 2cm’s needed to get it over the line. The 2cm’s may be an exaggeration, it could have been closer. 3 – 2 to Fleet & Ewshot. Weymouth then went on the attack, and after a period of pressure, a completely miss hit shot looped high over Toby and just under the crossbar. 3 – 3.

Final Score: 3 – 3.

The team showed great fighting spirit, and really deserved to get something from the game. Well done Guys!!

Scorers: Kyle; Tom & John. (a father and son scoring combination)

D.O.T.D: John – great save for Weymouth

M.O.T.M: Josh – unplayable on occasions, and great work rate.
